New Member Information

Welcome to The American Legion, Department of California, Post 237

Thank you for you service to our great country, and for your support of all veterans by joining our organization.

As a member of Post 237, there are a few things you'll need to know.
  1. Our general meetings (the ones where we vote on stuff) is held on the second Wednesday of each month @ 1900. This is an in-person meeting and is close to the public.  Sometimes guests are asked to come and speak, but they are not permitted to remain in the meeting room after that.
  2. We host a weekly coffee and doughnuts each Saturday morning from 7am-~8:45am in the social room. Join us to learn more about what's going on, and to meet some of the more active members.
  3. There is NO RANK within the American Legion, only volunteers. Even if a member is still actively serving in the armed forces, their rank is no different than a job title. Respecting one another is paramount regardless of when, where, or how long they served our country.
  4. The only official uniform for The American Legion is the cover (hat). There are a few different colors, each of which represent different levels within the American Legion organization. The dark blue covers are "Post" level covers, and is the one you will see most often.  Once in a while you may see a cover with a White top. Those are District officers. We are in District 10 (basically Alameda Country). All White covers are Department (State level) Officers, and Red covers are for National Officers. Post members are expected to purchase their own cover.
  5. You will see some members wearing a white shirt and black pants sometimes for various events, but those items are only expected to be purchased by members of the color/honor guard. If you are interested in being part of the color/honor guard, let one of the Post officers know and they can point you in the right direction.
  6. Get to know the Post Officers. They are your best resources for information and can help get you connected.

All Legion uniform items may be purchased on the "Flag and Emblem" website (https://emblem.legion.org). If you need any assistance, please let the Adjutant know and he/she can certainly help.

The American Legion, Department of California, has a great page of information that I would encourage you to review.
